The Alliance for Wise Energy Decisions (AWED) is an informal coalition of individuals and organizations interested in improving national, state, and local energy and environmental policies. Our premise is that technical matters like these should be addressed by using Real Science (please consult WiseEnergy.org for more information).
A key element of AWED’s efforts is public education. Towards that end, every three weeks we put together a newsletter to balance what is found in the mainstream media about energy and the environment. We appreciate MasterResource for their assistance in publishing this information.

Philosopher Alex Epstein champions fossil fuels at the Senate EPWC — complete testimony and Q&A
Epstein to Senators: Fossil fuels keep you ‘alive’; calls on Sen Whitehouse to ‘apologize or resign’
It’s true that without government subsidies, wind and solar panel renewable energy wouldn’t be so popular. Also low interest rates tend to skew the picture.
I’m a proud (…so far), 10 year, owner of a PV roof-top solar system 36 panels with 36 micro inverters. It really helps to defray the cost of running the water feature in my back yard.
But as the system ages I’m learning from the advantage of empirical data. First I was informed the MTBF of the micro-inverters was 331 years. After 10 yrs. in service and 3 micro inverter failures, I’m experiencing something less than a MTBF of 331 years. When the when the warranty period/service contract expires this could make the system cost prohibitive (labor + inverter cost > to energy cost savings).
More variables to consider:
When I sell my house —Will the PV system be positive or negative?
As the system ages, will the system MTBF decline?
What will be the impact of government subdies?
The cost to generate electricity for Utility company’s?
What new technologies will impact renewable energy?
